View of the West Front of Hampton Court Palace. This picture clearly shows the grand Tudor architecture of Cardinal Wolsey’s great Gatehouse. Hampton Court Palace, as its name suggests was built around a series of courtyards and the main approach was from the west through this imposing gatehouse. The gatehouse led to the Base Court which was surrounded by the grand residential apartments of the Palace. The courtyard is noted for its red brick and stone mullioned windows, elaborate chimney’s and lead capped turrets. This courtyard has been little changed since it was first built.
