View of the ruins of Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire showing the great east window in the Chapel of nine alters and beyond this the 12th century nave and 16th century tower. The Abbey dates from 1132 when a small community of monks broke away from the Benedictine Abbey of St Mary’s in York, to follower a more austere lifestyle. The monastery building, which was one of the largest in the country would have originally been simple and plain, but as rebuilding work took place over a 400 year period parts of the stonework were decorated and enhanced and as a result it is made up of a mixture of architectural styles.
