This is one of seven highly finished coloured drawings of Gibraltar, which accompany a report by Colonel William Green, Chief Engineer to Lord Viscount Townsend, Master General of the Ordnance of 10 April 1778. The report aimed to address ' the present state and strength of Gibraltar ...also describing the powers and properties of the new additional works and alterations executed since that period; and likewise setting forth what works may still be thought necessary to be added or altered, in order to arrive at and maintain a proportional equilibre of strength and defence throughout the whole peninsula against the attempts of an enemy by sea and land.
