Plan of the barracks at Fort William Henry in America. The fort was situated on the shore of Lake George in the province of New York. It was built in 1756 as a staging ground for attacks against Fort Carillion (a French fort which was later renamed Fort Ticonderoga when British forces took control). Fort William Henry was one of a number of forts built along the main waterway between Canada and the Colonies. It was a strategic site protecting the passageway and used as a resupplying point for troops.
