Frost Fair

Medium: Engraving
Date: 1740
During the 18th century the River Thames periodically froze over, leaving the surface solid enough to walk on. Impromptu celebrations known as Frost Fairs were held on the river, such as this one in 1740. This print shows skaters, a number of coffee houses and a printing booth erected on the ice.
