Frequented by many 18th-century tourists on their way up the Wye Valley, this spot was unusual because the river cuts a double-S loop through the limestone cliffs. In the 1750s, the new owner of the Piercefield estate, Valentine Morris, created a clifftop walk with seats and viewing platform at carefully chosen places and allowed people to visit. Many visitors were enraptured with the romantic beauty of the scenery, and the wild, natural feel of the place.
