Fishermen going on the board at Worthing
Medium: Etching, coloured
Fishing was one of Worthing's most important industries, and mackerel in particular were caught in great quantities. Worthing also developed as a pleasure resort in the 18th century, when bathing in seawater became fashionable. George III preferred to send his daughter Amelia to Worthing rather than Brighton, which encouraged other visitors to visit the town.
