View of Goodrich Castle, in Herefordshire, western England. The castle is situated on a hill overlooking the River Wye and is well protected by a substancial D shaped barbican, a large gatehouse and thick curtain walls. The oldest part of Goodrich castle is the small keep which was built by Godric Mappestone, after whom the castle is named, and which dates from the mid 12th century. In the 13th century the castle was rebuilt by the de Valance family and three towers, the gatehouse and the barbican were added to increase the castle’s defensive power.
