Gate of Eastby Abby

Gate of Eastby Abby

Medium: Ink wash on paper

Date: 1780

Shelfmark: Ktop XLV

Item number: 42 f

Genre: Topographical Drawing

Although entitled as 'Eastby Abbey', this is actually a view of the gatehouse to Easby Abbey in Yorkshire, which is the Swale Valley near Richmond. It was probably built around 1300. As can be seen in the picture, it had an upper storey with a two light window which suggests the 1300 date. Behind it there were storehouses and stables belonging to the abbey, but it was actually a fair distance from the inner precinct of the abbey. Visitors had to pass through this gateway and outer court to get to the main buildings.
