This mansion was built by an unknown architect around 1606 for the Royal Chancellor, Sir Walter Cope. It was passed to the earls of Holland. During the second half of the 18th century the house was bought by the Fox family, and became a centre for Whig politicians and literary figures such as Wordsworth, Sheridan and Byron.
