Nicholas Hawksmoor was born in Nottinghamshire in 1661. He later came to be employed in the offices of Sir Christopher Wren where he exhibited a natural flair for architecture and went on to design several East End churches. St. Mary-le-Bow was designed by Wren and completed in 1683 and was one of several City churches commissioned to replace those destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666.
