View of an iron smelting works at Coalbrook Dale in Shropshire. Georgian artists were interested in the impact of industry on their natural surroundings. This view shows clearly the contrast between the attractive valley and the rather ugly iron works, with its fires lighting up the scene. Along the road are pieces of iron scrap. The connection between the iron industry and this area also manifested itself when a innovatory iron bridge was built to cross the River Severn at Coalbrook Dale, using locally smelt iron and casting skills.
