This view is published in Lyson's 1791 Environs of London entitled 'A Curious Gatehouse at Stepney' . It was reputed to be the oldest building in Stepney and has an alleged connection with King John. Architecturally it is of interest because of its patterned brickwork. The site it stood on was part of the estate of the 1st Marquis of Worcester in the late 16th century and today the site is known as Stepney Green.
