View of Knockdolian Castle on the banks of the River Stinchar, in Ayrshire, Scotland. The Castle is a 16th century tower house and was a seat of the powerful and influential Cathcart family. It is situated near Colmonell and stands on Knockdolian Hill which rises to a height of 265 meters and gave its name to the castle. It was a secluded location and a mansion house was built near the castle in the Victorian period, which is now owned by the Duchess of Wellington. The River Stinchar rises on the slopes of Shalloch on Minnoch and flows through the Carrick Forrest and reaches the sea at Ballantrae Bay.
