View of Loweswater in Cumbria, Northern England by William Green. It is smaller than many of the lakes in this area and is unusual in that it is the only one to drain towards the north and towards Crummock Water to which it was once joined. William Green (1760-1823) was a well known landscape artist in the eighteenth century. He began his career as a surveyor in North Lancashire and Manchester but later moved to the Lake District where he became an artist. His paintings typically depict the lakes in bad weather with thick clouds above and in muted grey, brown and green colours.
