Llangollen Bridge, on the River Dee, North Wales
Artist: Walmsley, Thomas
View of Llangollen bridge in Caernarfonshire, North Wales. James John Hissey in his ‘Old Fashioned Journey through England and Wales’, published in 1884, wrote the following lines about the bridge. ‘…this is a very ancient structure. It is said to have been built by John Trevor, Bishop of St. Asaph, in the year 1346; but many archaeologists have considered it a much older structre, and in support of their theory in altering it … a stone was found built into the main arch with the initials W. S in quaint old letters and the date or figures 1131 upon it. So there is some probability, at any rate, that this fine old bridge is of very great age’.
