View of the Luggala Lake, also known as Lough Tay, in County Wicklow, Ireland. Luggelaw translates as ‘Hollow of the hill’ and Lough Tay as ‘sheltered lake’. The lake is situated in the Wicklow mountains. A banqueting house can be seen in the foreground of this picture, owned by Peter la Touche. County Wicklow is famed for its beautiful landscape of mountains, valleys, lakes and rivers making it a popular subject for landscape painters. The artist Thomas Sautelle Roberts (1760-1826) was a landscape painter from Waterford and was a founder member of the Hibernian Academy. His father was architect John Roberts who designed Waterford Cathedral and City Hall.
