Mount Pleasant

Etcher: Noel, Amelia
Medium: Etching, coloured
Date: 1797

View of an inn at Mount Pleasant in Kent. There is also a church spire in the background and several windmills on distant hills, while in the left corner is the coast. Inns were an important means of accommodation, for the Georgian traveller. The artist, etcher and publisher is unusually a woman. Mrs Amelia Noel (1759-1818) was a drawing mistress who exhibited landscapes between 1795 and 1804. Kent was one of her favoured locations to draw, alongside the Lake District and Ireland.
