View of the remains of Melrose Abbey in Scotland. The Abbey and its community of Cistercian monks was founded in the 12th century by King David I, near an earlier monastery, established by St Aiden in the 7th century. Melross Abbey was attacked by the English King Richard II in 1385 and a large church was built in its place in the 15th century. This church in contrast to the austere architecture of the earlier buildings, was designed in a highly decorative gothic style with intricate windows and beautiful stonework.
