View of Mapas' Obelisk. The monument stands on the summit of a hill in what is now Killiney Hill Park, Ireland and from this point there are extensive views of land and sea. The obelisk was built by Colonel John Mapas in the grounds of his house. In 1840 this house was bought and enlarged by Robert Warren who named it Killiney Castle. An inscription on the base of the monument reads,
“Last year being hard with the poor, the walls around these hills and this were erected by John Mapas, Esq. June, 1742.".
