Daniel Defoe found St Paul's to be ''a building exceeding beautiful and magnificent; tho' some authors are pleased to expose their ignorance, by pretending to find fault with it''. Some contemporaries found the pillars supporting the huge dome too gross and heavy-looking, but Defoe suggested that it was "Protestant plainness and lack of ornamentation" which gave the cathedral this impression.
