This road depicted is probably that from London to Dover, as Eltham was a prominent stop along the route. On his 1790 tour of Kent, diarist John Bying complained that "[when] we cross'd Blackheath to Eltham; and here The Road became so narrow, that a servant was always sent 1/2 a mile in advance, to remove obstructions."
