Old Church of St Peter le Poor, Broad Street London
Artist: [Malton, Thomas]
Medium: Watercolour with pen and ink
This shows St Peter's Church in Broad Street in London which was by the 16th century commonly known as St Peter-Le-Poor. It was rebuilt in 1540 and enlarged and repaired in 1615-30. Unlike so many London Churches, it survived the Great Fire of 1666 undamaged. It survived until the late 18th century, but by the 1780s had grown ruinous and its projection into Broad Street obstructed traffic. This view of c.1780 shows the old church before it was pulled down and its position on the road. In 1788-92 it was rebuilt by Jesse Gibson.
