Old Mill near Twickenham Common
Artist: Grose, Francis
View of the Oil mill on Twickenham Common by Francis Grose. Rapeseed or linseed was the raw material worked in these mills and large quantities of oil for use in lamps, soaps paints and the manufacturer of linoleum was produced. The oily by-product of the process was used to make cattle feed and was very valuable for the local economy. The artist, Francis Grose (1731-1791) was an English Antiquary and a retired Captain of the British Army. He was also an accomplished draughtsman who became best known for his work ‘Antiquities of England and Wales’ which was published in 1772-6. This picture of the mill at Twickenham was possibly a preparatory drawing for this work.
