[Marine Place and the Shore in] Sidmouth
View of houses forming Marine Place along the seafront at Sidmouth in Devon. Sidmouth was a small fishing village which, by the end of the 18th century had become moderately popular as a sea-bathing resort. It was never fashionable enough to attract large, grand housing developments. The sea front was scattered with fishing boats, bathing machines, bath houses, a few hotels and houses, a mixture of old cottages and new Georgian terraces. In the background there are picturesque cliffs and Salcombe Hill.
