This view of Plymouth in Devon shows the embarkation of some troops on board a fleet. The fleet is probably intended for the expedition against Cadiz under the command of the Earls of Essex and Nottingham, which took place in 1596. This expedition was part of the 16th century War against Spain and the expedition was an important victory. The Spanish fleet were defeated in Cadiz Harbour, 53 vessels were destroyed and the city was stormed showing the might of the English navy. This drawing is apparently an 18th century copy from a contemporary original.
