View of Steephill in the Isle of Wight. Steephill is situated near Ventnor on the south eastern coast of the Island. A guidebook to the Isle of White published in the late 19th century by T. Nelson and Sons quotes Sir Joseph Paxton when describing the area, “Its situation is singularly picturesque, and though, perhaps the hand of the ‘improver’ is seen a little too visibly, it remains what Sir Joseph Paxton pronounced it, a pre-eminently attractive locality. “I have visited”, he said “nearly every place of note, from Stockholm to Constantinople, and have never seen anything more beautiful than this”.
