When travelogue author Celia Fiennes visited Sandwich in 1697, she found that it had declined from being one of England's most important ports into "a sad old town - all timber buildings". However, by the 18th century, most of the timber buildings were rebuilt or refaced in brick giving the town a more fashionable appearance.
