The rock depicted in this print is known as the Hugh Lloyd or Huw Llwyd Pulpit. Situated near Ffestiniog, this column of rock forms part of the lower of two waterfalls on the River Cynfal. This beautiful site is known as Cymorthyn, and legend holds that Hugh Lloyd of Cynfal Fawr, a 17th century poet, astrologer and magician, used to visit this spot to deliver incantations, lead prayers for local villagers and even to expel devils and evil spirits.
