Paper Mills, situated about two Miles from the City of Dublin

Artist: Unknown
Medium: Aquatint, coloured
Date: 1800

View of a paper mill situated about 2 miles from the City of Dublin. There was a large increase in the demand for paper in the 18th century and many mills were built to accommodate this ddemand and by 1800 there were over 60 mills in Ireland. At this time paper was made from rags which were beaten to a pulp in the mills and then compressed and moulded. The process took a considerable length of time because most of the work was done by hand and so production rates were low.
