Prospect of the Town of Wicklow
Medium: Ink wash on paper
View of the town of Wicklow, in County Wicklow, Ireland. Situated on the eastern coat of Ireland, Wicklow was settled by the Vikings in the ninth century. By the 17th century Wicklow was a thriving port and an important commercial centre. Black castle has been marked in the background of this picture. The castle stands on a rocky promontory to the east of the town. Building of the castle was started by Maurice Fitzgerald in 1176 but his death in 1177 delayed the work and it was not completed until 1220.
