Print of a regatta on Kewick Lake in Cumbria, Northern England. An anonymous author wrote about a regatta held here in 1782 in his work ‘Echoes of the Lakes and Mountains, or Wonderful things in the Lake District’, “The sides of the hoary mountains were clad with spectators, and the glassy surface of the lake was variegated with a number of pleasure barges which, tricked out in all the gayest colours, and glittering in the rays of a meridian sun, gave a new appearance to the celebrated beauties of this matchless vale.” Guns were fired at twelve noon to mark the opening of the regatta and some of the events of the day were: a race around the lakes islands, a mock attack on Pockington’s Island and a dance in a marquee which had been specially erected on the banks of the lake.
