Rufus Stone - New Forest Hampshire No. 1
Artist: Allen, I. T.
This is the first of two almost identical views of the Rufus stone. This one features watercolour brushwork. The Rufus Stone marks the site of William II's death in 1100, when he was shot by an arrow while hunting in the New Forest. The stone was erected by John Lord Delwar in 1745. Inscribed on the stone is the message that George III visited the site on 17 June 1789.
