Ruins of St Martin's church, Dover 48 I
Artist: Grose, Francis
Medium: Pen and ink on paper
This church was part of the Benedictine Priory of St Martin, a Norman structure that replaced a still earlier church. Construction began in 1180. The priory was dissolved in 1535 and the buildings and estates were given to the Archbishop of Canterbury. The artist, Francis Grose, was particularly interested in antiquities, and such drawings or etchings of ruined buildings often enjoyed a wide circulation.
