Margate became a popular resort for the English nobility in the 18th century. Fashionable people came to follow the new trend for sea-bathing as a health restorative. Elegant new houses and a stone pier were built to accommodate the visitors. This picture shows the storm in 1808 which carried off a pier built in 1789.
