Richmond Hill was a fashionable area in which wealthy gentleman and city merchants built their country homes. On an attractive eminence overlooking the Thames Valley, it became increasingly popular from the 16th century onwards. Daniel Defoe, writing in the early 18th century, commented: "From Richmond to London, the river sides are full of villages, and those villages so full of beautiful buildings, charming gardens, and rich habitations."
