Ross Castle on the Island of Ross Great Lake of Killarney

View of Ross Castle, Ireland. The castle is situated on Lough Leane in the south west of Killarney. The main part of the castle was built in the 14th century by the O’Donoghue clan, the rulers of the area. The layout is typical of the type of castle known as a tower house- the principal chambers are stacked on one another in the main body of the tower with an annex at one end containing the staircase. The rooms in the tower were a reception room, a bed chamber and unusually the top storey was the main hall. It was one of the last strongholds to surrender to Cromwell’s forces in 1652 during the English Civil War.
