View of cottages at Swilly in Devon. Swilly was in the parish of Stoke Damerel in Devonport Borough, part of Plymouth. In the late 18th century there was a country estate here, which was owned by the Furneaux family. It included a Tudor manor house. Tobias Furneaux of Swilly was a famous seaman who took part in a voyage to circumnavigate the globe in 1766-8. The Swilly estate no longer exists as it was purchased for council housing after the First World War.
