By the early 17th century, Southampton had lost its importance as a major trading port. The volume of the town's commerce had decreased and the town was lying in neglect. In the second half of the 17th century it was developed as a seaside resort and many fine new houses were built. This drawing has been attributed to Dominic Serres (1719-1793), a French artist who was "Marine Painter to His Majesty".
