These is the remains of the first Benedictine Abbey in England, established around AD598. The magnificent, crenellated great gatehouse completed the building of the inner court in 1309. In 1703 a storm severely damaged many of the buildings. A 1722 image by William Stukeley and all subsequent drawings show the south and east ranges of the inner great court becoming ruined.
