Educated at Northampton Grammar School and Lincoln College, Oxford, James Hervey was a leading Anglican supporter of Calvinism and published several books. He was ordained in 1737 and later came to work in his father's parish of Weston-Favell, becoming its rector in 1752. His house, the rectory, was built of stone partly faced with brick before 1758.
