Stock Gyll Park was one of the tourist sites of the Cumbrian neighbourhood that William Wordsworth wrote about in his 1810 'Guide to the Lakes': "Rides may be taken in numerous directions [from Ambleside], and the interesting walks are inexhaustible." Wordsworth promoted a tour of the Lake District as an alternative to the Grand Tour of Europe traditionally undertaken by the wealthy.
