This medieval church was destroyed in a fire in 1853 and rebuilt by Sir Gilbert Scott. Daniel Defoe visited the church and took an interest in some of the tombstones in the church of several Doncastrians: Rovert Byrk and Thomas Ellis, who was mayor and established the town's hospital. The medieval market town of Doncaster was centred around St George's Church.
