Richmond Castle is situated in a commanding position on a clifftop overlooking the steep Swale Valley in Yorkshire. Richmond was granted by William the Conqueror to Alan the Red, who began building the stone castle between 1071 and 1089. The great 12th-century keep is over 100 feet high and very well preserved. By the late 18th century, the political significance of the castle had declined.
