View of Kildare Cathedral and Tower in Ireland. An earlier church on this site was burnt down in the 9th century and later a cathedral built by Ralph of Bristol in around 1223 was also burned in the rebellion of 1641. Part of the cathedral was rebuilt immediately and the remainder was remodelled in 1875. To the left of this picture is the round tower. The tower was built in the 12th century, it is more than one hundred foot high and 5 foot in diameter inside. Interestingly the doorway to the tower is 15 feet above the ground. The battlements at the top of the tower were added in the 18th century.
