View of Staten Island in New York harbour in America. The island is 14 miles in length and 7 in width. It was first sighted by Italian explorer Giovanni de Verrazzano in 1524. It was Dutch colonists who were the first to settle on the island in the 1620s and the name Staten Island was given in honour of the States General in the Netherlands which sponsored the settlement of New Amsterdam. British colonists took control of the island in 1667 and it was renamed Richmond Island; now both names are used interchangeably.
