Popularly known as St George-in-the-East, this is the parish church of Wapping-Stepney. It was built by architect Nicholas Hawksmoor between 1714 and 1729, a reponse to the great population increase in Stepney at the time. Hawksmoor's design incorporated a huge 160-foot tower.
