The West Front of Norwich Cathedral

The West Front of Norwich Cathedral

Artist and engraver: Sanders, J.

Medium: Aquatint

Date: 1787

Shelfmark: Ktop XXXI

Item number: 35e

Genre: Topographical Print

View of the West Front of Norwich Cathedral showing off its huge Gothic window. The cathedral according to Daniel Defoe, 'is a fine fabrick, and the spire steeple very high and beautiful'. The spire is the second highest spire in England which can be readily seen when approaching the city from the surrounding countryside. The cathedral in Norwich was not established until the early twelfth century (the Bishop's see, previously at Thetford, was moved to Norwich in 1094) and is a fairly complete example of a Romanesque cathedral.
