This image gives us a valuable indication of the situation and strategic importance of Tynemouth priory. This ancient monastic site dates from the eighth century, an era of Viking invasions, and was built with defence as well as religious life in mind. Surrounded by sheer cliffs on three sides, it guarded the mouth of the River Tyne. It was also probably used as a landmark to help ships navigate the coastline.
