The Gate of Farley Castle

Artist: Sanders, J.
Medium: Aquatint
Date: 1793
Farley Castle in Somerset was built by Thomas Hungerford, Speaker of the House of Commons, who acquired the site from the Montfort family in 1369. In the early 15th century his son Walter enlarged the castle adding the outer court and chapel. This is one of six views of the local area made for Caleb Hillier Parry (1755-1822) a noted Bath physician, agriculturalist and geologist. The artist is John Sanders Jnr (1750-1825) who moved to bath in 1790.
